Over the past few days, social media has been squawking about an interview with The Skeleton Twins stars Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader with a chipper, but uninformed Denver newscaster Chris Parente.
Parente is certainly not the first interviewer to talk about a film he hasn’t watched (many of the actors publicize their films sight unseen). Parente deserves credit not only for the “full frontal” jugular in terms of making an ass of himself, but for his bold self-deprecation of his ignorance. More importantly, Parente’s caffeinated persona established a silliness that greatly contributed to Hader and Wiig handling the situation with great humor, gently skewering Parente for his gaffe. This five minute segment is funnier than the majority of SNL skits.
If only more press junket interviews were this entertaining.
There’s an interview with the duo by a couple of Detroit Fox News reporters that’s a true atrocity.
The segment is characterized by the utter lack of chemistry between the interviewers and the actors. Unlike Parente, these dudes are never able to establish a rapport with Wiig and Hader who are clearly flustered by the clunky and unimaginative questions. The reporters’ attempts at doing something original, such as asking Wiig’s opinion about the Pixar movie Up, only make things more awkward.
